"And how grateful I am for the times you do indulge me! Truly, I know not how you manage to sleep so much."

He laughs, flipping through the menu quickly. He's already familiar with a lot of the options, so choosing is more a matter of figuring out what he feels like most today.

"Certainly. I've been here before, after all."

Hythlodaeus beckons to the waiter and cheerfully relays their order, although Hades gets a polite question along the lines of "would you like anything else". For himself, Hythlodaeus orders a pomegranate salad, braised salmon and rose hip tea with dessert. He does have more appetite than a puny mage who did not have to be thrown into a lake today.

After the waiter hurries away, Hythlodaeus gives Hades an impish look.

"Oh, they do rather good chocolates, too. Would you like some, Hades?"

He flushes lightly, suddenly becoming very enamoured with the decor.

"...If you wish to order some then I have no objection," he mutters.

Well, now that they're here, the question of what to do on a date arises. He is not one to obey so-called conventions of course. If Hythlodaeus intends to court him then he would rather his friend does so with their own charm and not what they perceive he will respond to.

Some guilt lingers, as ever, at the back of his thoughts.

Hythlodaeus stares, and feels just a little bit guilty at receiving such a response when his comment was only a joking reference to what ended up bringing them together in the first place. On the other hand, he absolutely cannot ignore just how adorable the reaction is when put in the context of the usual responses his friend has for him - mainly varying shades of annoyance and exasperation.

Hythlodaeus props his chin on his hand, playing with the menu. For whatever reason, he feels very content, almost as though they are back home.

"Well, I am partial to rum or liqueur-based ones, but they have all manners of curious fillings and additives. There is a moss one, I believe, if you would fancy that. Or black rose, although I doubt I could tell you what the difference from regular rose would be."

"Moss," he repeats, incredulous. No, that seems a bit too experimental for his tastes. His preferences have always lain with the familiar, he only grudgingly sampling new things because either Hythlodaeus or their other mutual friend pushed them on to him.

"...The black rose one may be worth trying for the novelty of it," he allows, after a pause. That plan, too, had ended in failure, he thinks morosely. He wonders if this promise to restore their worlds would enable its spread. Or would it simply allow him to triumph over the Warrior of Light?

Their face crosses his thoughts, not for the first time. Their kindness, their determination, their smile - would that he could see them again.

He goes quiet, staring over the loft railing at the diners below.

"I can try the moss one, then!"

Hades's change in demeanour does not escape Hythlodaeus, but he would be hard-pressed to name the reason for it. He follows his friend's gaze, then looks back to him. Well, it does usually fall to him to pull Hades out of whatever gloom he might settle in...

"If I were to tell you what nickname I've thought of for you, would you push me over the railing this time?"

The absurdity of the comment garners a snort from him. Wouldn't that be a sight, he thinks with a faint smirk, imagining his friend crashing through the table below to the shocked yells of the patrons. But it would only be funny if his friend weren't seriously hurt by it.

The thought of violence against Hythlodaeus does not particularly warm him.

"Oh, go on then. Get it over with. I doubt I shall find another railing quite so inviting in the near future."

He laughs in response, only too happy to have his friend play along.

"Shall I compile a list of places that you could push me off? I am still exploring the city, after all. There may be much better railings!"

Hythlodaeus's grin fades to his trademark smile as he leans back in his seat a little, crossing his arms and closing his eyes.

"As I have said before, 'tis nearly impossible to shorten your name to something--or if it is, I have not been able to think of it. So... I decided to approach it from another angle. Choosing aught based on your title seemed a little thoughtless to me, and I did not wish to constantly remind you of the reason you had to accept the position. What else, therefore, I could base a name for you on? Which aspect of you?"

He opens his eyes, directing his friend a mischievous yet almost proud look.

"A name for someone as gifted in the Sight as myself. For someone ever loyal to his duty - not simply out of obligation, but out of his caring heart. For a beloved of the Underworld."

Hythlodaeus tilts his head, his smile a little softer now.

"Agesandros, I would call you. Our ferryman, he who leads us through this life and beyond."

How is it that Hythlodaeus manages to both annoy and make his heart skip in turn? The man always finds some way to upset his equilibrium. Any time he feels he has settled, along comes his friend to disturb that peace. In this case, his eyes widen a fraction and he quickly takes to staring at the table.

'Agesandros'... He swallows uneasily, throat feeling tight. No, he's undeserving of the platitude. Lead them through life and the beyond? Sent them there perhaps. And he would send yet more of them to their deaths in order to see their people return.

The world seems to tilt and he has to shake himself. "'Tis a good name," he finds himself saying numbly. "I suppose I won't throw you over this time."

Hythlodaeus reaches out across the table to brush his fingers against his friend's. Even if he weren't paying so much attention, it's obvious that Hades is shaken, one way or another--and Hythlodaeus can only hope that it is not for a bad reason.

"Worry not, Agesandros. I shall yet give you plenty of reasons to throw me over! So do cheer up."

He taps Hades's hand with his finger, then makes a brief noise of surprise, as though something just occurred to him.

"Oh, I've just remembered. There is something I've been wanting to ask you."

No. When you hear of all that I've done, 'twill be me you wish to throw over the railing.

He turns his hand over as though inviting Hythlodaeus to grasp it. There is a note of confusion in his eyes as he stares at his friend.

"Ask me what?"

The gesture is small, but it makes Hythlodaeus feel warm inside all the same. He smiles, taking Hades's hand.

"If you had won in our little game... What would you have asked of me? You made it sound rather intriguing."

He smiles thinly. It seems silly now, thinking about it, with where they are now.

"Hmm, if you found it intriguing, my dear friend, then I think I shall keep it so," he says, some of his humour creeping back. "I shall enjoy tormenting you with the secret."

Hythlodaeus does feel a little incensed at not being told immediately, but he is definitely not willing to show that - besides, he thinks he has a pretty good comeback that might put Hades in his place.

"Enjoy tormenting me, hmm? I did always think that you've a... punitive streak in you. Are you more willing to indulge it nowadays?"

His grip tightens a little as he leans in, lowering his voice to a purr.

"What if I am, 'Daeus?" It comes with a flash of teeth, like a predator wanting to sink its teeth in prey.

The response... is not one Hythlodaeus was expecting at all, and his eyes widen in surprise, a blush creeping across his cheeks. He has to concede that Hades really was not joking about having gotten better at enduring his teasing - Hythlodaeus is utterly certain that the Hades he knows would have gotten indignant about the suggestion at best.

Damn if he's going to back down and give his friend the satisfaction of winning again, however. Hythlodaeus leans in a little closer as well, propping up his chin on his other hand, face flushed but his expression as mischievous as ever.

"Took you long enough, then," he replies, lowering his voice in kind. If Hades was hoping to fluster him with the grip, Hythlodaeus is just going to use that to his advantage, pressing his palm closer against his friend's, fingers tracing random shapes on his skin.

"May I ask what manner of punishment you would devise for me... my Agesandros?"

The name elicits a small thrill down his spine. A name for him and him alone. It almost doesn't feel real.

He refuses to back down though. His suggestive comment is having a noticeable impact and this is much more entertaining than leaving Hythlodaeus with the upper hand.

"Well," he begins, gently rubbing his thumb back and forth along the side of Hythlodaeus' wrist, "first, I think I must needs ensure you cannot wriggle out of my grasp. You can be quite slippery when you out your mind to it, as I remember. And then once I have you secured, I would see to it that your clever mouth is silenced." Here he reaches with his other hand to trace his friend's lower lip. "Good students listen attentively, 'Daeus. You know this, yes?"

As much as he tries not to show it, Hythlodaeus sucks in a quiet breath and almost shivers at the suggestion and the touch, the blush on his face much more prominent now. By the heavens, when did his friend become like this? Hythlodaeus almost curses his fate that did not lead him to that city as well - losing to Hades in a game that was supposed to be his stings more than he would care to admit, even if it's not exactly an unpleasant manner of loss. But a loss all the same.

In retaliation, he closes his eyes and takes the hand that Hades--Agesandros so unwisely brought to his face, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to his fingers.

"Why, certainly... But I fear I might find it, ah, hard to keep my attention on the lecture. Will there be a quiz afterwards?"

How cute, he thinks to himself. This is a side of his friend that he has never seen before. The other man has never been shy but the blush on his cheeks is incredibly endearing. Hades finds a glimmer of a genuine smile tugging at his lips as Hythlodaeus' lips brush his fingertips.

"Mm... Naturally." He half-rises out of his seat so that he can whisper the coup de grace. "But how well you do will be based upon your...performance," he murmurs.

He sits back and gently withdraws his hands, folding them smugly in his lap.

All things considered, Hythlodaeus is pretty proud of his own restraint in the circumstances - his reaction could have been quite different had this manner of proposal been sprung on him suddenly, but with the previous exchange it's much easier to anticipate the kind of things his friend might say. He "only" sucks in a shuddering breath, his eyes sliding shut, forces himself to breathe out slowly, his hands tensing as he tries to avoid digging his nails into the wood of the table or into his own skin to relieve at least a little of the tension. But that would be an utterly ignominious loss, one that Hythlodaeus would never live down. And damn the thoughts that maybe he's enjoying this.

He withdraws his hands as well, folding his arms and opening his eyes to fix Agesandros with as smug a look as he can manage under the circumstances.

"May I have some study material, then? You would not be so cruel as to simply spring the examination on your poor unprepared student, would you?"

By the heavens, the self-satisfied look on Hades's face annoys him so much in a way none of his friend's other expressions ever have. What's equally--if not more--annoying is the realization that he could want that much. It's not as though Hythlodaeus has never thought of his friend in that light, but there is an ocean of difference between working himself up into a fantasy and the man actually flirting with him.

He laughs delightedly. By Zodiark, he wishes he could freeze this moment in time that he might look upon it forever. The look on Hythlodaeus' face makes his heart beat all the faster, even as he feels guilty for enjoying it.

"I suppose it would be unfair to leave you with nothing to reflect upon. Come here, then..."

He beckons coyly with one finger. Should Hythlodaeus lean back in, Hades will give him a leisurely, heartfelt kiss.

The beckoning nets Hades another petulant look, Hythlodaeus tensing a little again at the inner conflict of annoyance at being so easily led and, well, the fact that this is rather accurate to the kind of things he's fantasized about. In hindsight, that might have been a mistake.

He heaves a sigh, trying to get himself to relax, and gives his friend another smile.

"Oh, I suppose I must needs listen to the orders of my superior sometimes..."

Hythlodaeus leans in again, heart beating all the faster once he realizes what it is Hades intends--in public, no less, despite his earlier scolding of Hythlodaeus himself for merely trying to save himself from pneumonia. Still, at least this kiss does not seem to carry the possibility of being pushed off anything, and he did feel cheated back at the lake...

He closes his eyes as he kisses back, face flushing again, but refusing to back down. His pride has taken enough of a beating today already, and so reaches out to trace his fingers up his friend's neck, cupping his chin, then sliding his fingers into his hair.

Unfortunately, however, what this kiss carries is the possibility of being interrupted by the waiter's polite cough, and Hythlodaeus jerks back quickly, flustered and suddenly painfully aware of the fact that this is still in public. At least, the waiter does not seem embarrassed, only amused as he places their orders before them and almost mischievously wishes them to enjoy themselves.

Hythlodaeus sighs as he pours himself the tea to start with. What a day.

"I shall admit you've gotten better, but do not think you've won yet, Agesandros."

Unfortunately for Hythlodaeus, Hades has had ample time to grow used to giving and receiving public affection. He lets himself relax into the hand cupping his face, time and aught else fading to obscurity as quiet bliss suffuses him.

...Only to be interrupted by their waiter.

Hades leans back with a lot less fluster but spots of pink remain in his cheeks. He takes a sip of coffee after the server has gone, feeling unsettled but pleased with himself.

"Perhaps not, but I shall count it as a small victory all the same, 'Daeus," he says, smiling indulgently over the rim of his mug. "You are some several thousand years behind me now. I do hope you'll catch up quickly else this game might grow stale."

Hythlodaeus is at least good at bouncing back, and only arches an eyebrow at that comment.

"Stale? You seemed to be enjoying yourself quite a bit to me. How do you like finally seeing things from my side? After all, that is the kind of entertainment I've had at your expense for many centuries."

He smiles, taking a sip of his tea, feeling more balanced again.

"There is a certain pleasure to it, yes."

He drops his gaze to the omelette in front of him, delicately picking up his knife and fork to begin cutting in. It partially hides the smile he wears now, fond and faint.

"...One that I never thought I would experience," he adds softly.

Sitting here with his friend, taking their ease with the soft murmur of other patrons around them - a quiet pleasure he had taken for granted back then. He will never make that mistake again. Every moment is precious. Every second of every minute of every hour...

Is this what it's like to be mortal?

Hythlodaeus smiles in return, just as fondly if more openly than Hades himself. He feels... warm, content, at peace, and that kind of warmth, he thinks, is better than the earlier fire between them. There is certainly a lot to be said for the thrill of open flirting and the playful promises masquerading as threats, but in the end Hythlodaeus knows that what he really wants is this gentle intimacy, quiet enjoyment of each other's company, of each other's existence. Just... being, together. It's worth millennia upon millennia of passionate nights - although, of course, Hythlodaeus would not object to those, either.

"Then I am happy that I could help you experience it, Agesandros," he replies, his voice gentle and fond. "Even if it should at times come at the expense of the more superficial parts of my pride," he adds with another, cheekier smile. "But I am ready to sacrifice those for you."
