[ Let's not get too meta here, Emet. ]
I say prayer but any suitably strong force of will can achieve the same effect. 'Tis simply that for the lesser races, prayer and faith - and numbers - are the most consistent manner of manifesting it.
I am of the original people of the star before it was sundered. I have lived well over ten thousand years whilst the the lifespan of other races range from a single century to thrice that. Their physical and aetherial capabilities do not come close to that which they once could wield.
Yet if you drove a blade into my heart this very moment I would die like any other living creature.
'Immortality' to one such as I - or to one of my people - is not a matter of age. It is a matter of persisting beyond our physical existence. It is shown in our deeds or perhaps our words, outlasting whatever years we spend on this star. You need no further proof than my own title, Emet-Selch, named after some individual from the distant past. A person may be forgotten but their deeds are forever.
